Among the groups of students we followed last year, there were also work-study programs for classical high schools, and we chose to talk about them because the benefits of an internship abroad for this type of school are not always obvious.
In fact, one of the main challenges for classical high schools is finding internship opportunities that are not only useful and educational but also align with their academic path, focused on humanities such as literature, philosophy, history, and ancient languages. However, these very skills can be enhanced and applied in innovative professional contexts if the placement is carefully planned.
The truth is that classical high schools can access a series of stimulating projects that match their type of studies. Reviewing the students’ resumes and understanding their career aspirations also helped us in the placement process, and in the end, we identified the most relevant projects. Here are some of them.
Journalism
We brought the students into a real newsroom, giving them the opportunity to see firsthand how mass communication works behind the scenes, what decision-making processes lie behind a headline, and how the language used to report facts is chosen.During this project, students also had the opportunity to follow the process of editing and publishing articles, delving into fundamental aspects such as the importance of sources, journalistic ethics, and the use of new media for disseminating news.
No less important, participants learned to work as a team, supporting the group through their role, and acquired a working method in a significant sector such as media. Those aspiring to a career in this field gain important skills through this project.
Web Radio
Remaining within the communication sector, we organised a project that took students to a web radio, a radio station that broadcasts online rather than on traditional frequencies.Working in such an environment allows students to test their communication skills, having to move within the boundaries of a certain style to appeal to a specific audience. Students actively participate in all radio activities, from schedule organisation to program planning.
Furthermore, students had the chance to create and host short programs on topics of their interest, learning how to balance creativity and professionalism while respecting the established radio format.Once again, teamwork is an essential component from which students can greatly benefit.
Social Media
Social media is the new communication medium par excellence, connecting brands with users and allowing the former to promote their brand and activities in an innovative and certainly more appreciated way than traditional media.
The purpose of work-study programs for classical high schools at social media marketing agencies is to give students the opportunity to learn the rules of online communication and understand the working method used by industry specialists. Additionally, it allows them to test their language skills (particularly their ability to adapt their linguistic register according to the target audience) and manage a real project, from editorial planning to handling real clients’ profiles.
Additionally, students are taught how to measure campaign success through statistical analysis and the use of advanced tools for monitoring social media performance.
Administration
Placing students in companies dealing with administrative services has proven to be a good choice for work-study programs for classical high schools and similar educational paths, thanks to the interaction with the public, a relevant skill in this sector. Also worth appreciating is the opportunity to acquire organizational and management skills that would be difficult to obtain through regular school paths.
Experience in the administrative field also offers the possibility of improving the ability to work with precise deadlines, plan complex activities, and use management software, skills increasingly required in the modern job market.
Why Abroad
In addition to what has just been discussed, one must consider the added value of the experience abroad, which promotes students’ open-mindedness, improves their language skills, provides exposure to a completely new environment, and requires them to live away from home for a period of time. These qualities certainly help students approach adulthood with the awareness of having the right tools to face university or the job market.
An international experience also allows students to enrich their CV with intercultural and problem-solving skills, highly appreciated by employers and universities. Living abroad stimulates autonomy, resilience, and adaptability, essential qualities for a future academic or professional career.
